Antler Lake Update

Remember Antler Lake? Mentioned it a couple of posts ago HERE...well, on July 29, lightning struck and started a forest fire there...hopefully they can get it out soon, but with over 500 forest fires in the province at the moment, resources are being stretched. The record-high temperatures have left all areas of the province with an extreme (or high) fire-danger rating. A few residential areas have been evacuated in the past couple of weeks in the interior due to the severity of the wildfires and more were evacuated again last night in another community. These wildfires are definitely putting a damper on summer here in BC. We can never thank enough, the hardworking individuals and groups that are working as a team to fight these fires from the air and the ground and those volunteers that assist those who have been ordered to flee their homes as well as all the first responders. A big THANK YOU to everyone that has been working non-stop during this busy fire season---you are appreciated!

This fire is highly visible from Gold River.

The public can call the Coastal Fire Centre for information: 1-250-951-4209.

Cause: Lightning
This is one of several lightning strikes in the area.

Resources
Initial Attack crews supported by helicopters have been working this difficult area. Terrain and steep slopes are hampering access to this fire.

Crews are working on the lower portion of the fire in the areas that are accessible to them. Helicopters continue to bucket hot spots to prevent it moving beyond the retardant lines.

July 31, 2009 airtankers were called in to action the fire this morning.

Due to increased fire activity in the Quinsam Wildfire Coordination Centre resources are being shared and allocated on a priority basis to fires in this region.
